Framing & Mounting Tips
Framing and mounting art
Step 1
Measure the glass with your frame, this will be the overall size of the mount board. If you’re working with an A3 print you’d typically go for a frame the size of 17x21 inch. The most important thing to remember is that the frame is bigger than the print. if the frame is 17x21 inch the reason you measure the glass is because the glass will be smaller than the overall frame size, you need the mount the same size as the glass. The colour and design of the frame is completely up to you, I’m just using these measurements as a guide.
Tip= Always go for a white or off white mount no matter the frame colour, these will always complement the artwork no matter what it is.
Step 2
Measure your art work, if your art work is A3 then it will measure at 11.7x16.5 inch. You need to cut out the middle of the mount board. If your art work measures at 11.7x16.5 then you need to cut out a fraction smaller so that the mount overlaps the art work. Place your print in the middle of the mount board making sure it is level at all sides. Mark out where your print will go with a pencil, don’t worry about the markings if your mount board is the same colour on both sides this will be used as the back, no one will see them. With a ruler and pencil draw a rectangle a fraction smaller inside the A3 print markings you made earlier, these will be the lines you cut (the smallest marking you made)
Step 3
Cut along the inside lines you made with a ruler and sharp craft of stanly knife, being careful not to harm yourself of let the ruler slip. This might take a few passings with the knife along the ruler.
Step 4
Centre your print in the middle of you new ready cut mount and use a bit of masking tape on the back at the top to hold your print in place. Then put your mount and print inside the frame and place the back of the frame all together.
